A security expert, Akin Adeyi has stated that the spate with which security of lives and property is currently being threatened in Osun State calls for collective concern.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mr. Adeyi called on Governor Gboyega Oyetola to henceforth up his game especially in the area of provision of tighter security for Osun residents.
According to Adeyi, “there is an increasing need for the governor to be more tactical and ruthless in his approach. Also, he needs to liaise with all the stakeholders in the security community in order to proffer more solid solutions to the rampant menace of cult and ritual killings, kidnapping, robbery and land grabbing also known as Omo Onile that are now rampant especially in Osogbo the state capital.
“The security situation everywhere is currently worrisome. It is such that the people especially in the state capital now move around in the evening with palpable fears of being physical attacked and possibly dispossessed of their valuables by hoodlums.
“The miscreants usually take over the streets and major junctions as early as s7 O’Clock in the evening to commence their operations of harassment and dispossession of their victim’s valuables and money. The development has forced residents into a kind of self imposed curfew. Hence, people are seen rushing to their houses as early as 6pm.
“Another criminal affront is in the activities of “Omo Onile”. This army of youths usually armed with guns and other dangerous weapons have adopted the strategy of exerting physical threat to extort innocent residents and artisans contracted to work on construction sites.
“In some cases they extort their victims to the tune of hundreds of thousands of Naira. Where victims can not afford payment of this criminal levies, they suffer physical brutality and other infliction of sabotage on their project. This has always made residents to abandon their project sites.
“The heights of this dangerous dimension is in the daylight killings and its reprisals by cult groups. This is unbecoming in a sane society. That some criminal elements will rise up in arms, storm the streets in broad daylight and start shooting to kill as was witnessed at Oke Baale and Owode area of the state capital lately is the height of insecurity and it must be urgently addressed.
“Another disheartening development is the incessant Kidnapping of citizens and other travelers on the state highways. All these developments call for immediate attention before they escalate into their uncontrollable levels.”
Adeyi posited that provision of security should rank topmost in a responsible government’s lists of priorities, adding that a situation where certain elements in the society have formed themselves into a major threat and institutions of harrasment everywhere in the state without their being checked by the authority is condemnable.
“It may make the people think that in some cases, the criminals might be working for the government after all.
“Mr Oyetola and the APC government had better imagined how horrifying and terrible the current security situation could be on the citizens and their economic activities and do something positive to alleviate this terrible menace in security.
“This will no doubt reassure the good people of Osun that truly there is a governor and a government in place in Osun”, he concluded.
