Plateau United lost more ground in the title race after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Gombe United on Sunday.
The Jos club were hoping to reduce the gap between them and leaders Rivers United after the latter were held to a 0-0 draw by Rangers in Awka on Saturday.
The evening however ended in disappointment for them after Nenrot Silas missed a penalty late in the game.
Andrew Ikefe put Plateau United ahead on the hour mark, while Ibrahim Yahaya equalised for the visitors in the 70th minute.
Rivers United now need three points from the remaining four games to be crowned NPFL champions for the first time.
In Ijebu Ode, bottom club, MFM stunned eight-time champions Enyimba 2-1.
Enyimba took the lead through Victor Mbaoma on 52 minutes.
It was Mbaoma’s 16th goal of the campaign ,which put him level with Rivers United’s Chijoke Akuneto.
Elsewhere, Remo Stars boosted their chances of securing third position courtesy of a 3-1 win against Lobi Stars in Ikenne.
Sikiru Alimi, Tolulope Ojo and Samuel Anakwe were on target for the hosts.
Francis Odinaka was on target for Lobi Stars.
